Enhancing the Transdisciplinary Research Ecosystem for Earth & Environmental Science with Dedicated Cyber Infrastructure Professionals

In the age of Big Data, cutting-edge Environmental research increasingly demands novel cyber infrastructure expertise. Predicting, and managing change in climate, biodiversity, and Earth’s oceans and fisheries depends on the collection, organization, and analysis of massive quantities of data from novel sensors, platforms, and models. Advanced use of technologies like machine learning, model forecasting, and reliance on high-performance computing must now be routine in environmental science.

Maintaining research at the forefront requires cyber infrastructure, including human resources with the skills to contribute innovation to findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable data and analysis pipelines. UMCES and UMBC Environmental Science researchers seek to increase the sharing of cyber infrastructure knowledge and to develop capacity to train scientists how to apply next generation resources while engaging in team science. A foundational step in this work is committing to the development and support of a research facilitation team that integrates seamlessly with our science.
